Stormwater Training for Local Officials
Stormwater BMP Technology Demonstration Workshop
Description:
Come learn about stormwater management at the UNH Stormwater Center - a unique field research facility which serves as a site for testing stormwater treatment processes and for technology demonstrations. This workshop will examine the performance, cost, suitability, operations, and maintenance issues associated with different stormwater management unit processes. Given that stormwater run-off is a primary source of contaminants to waterbodies in our state, this training will provide valuable information that can help with the development of solutions. The workshop will offer information which can be applied to the planning, design, and implementation of stormwater management strategies in communities. The workshop will include a field facility tour followed by a working lunch. Materials and lunch will be provided.
Before registering for this workshop, please contact the Mass Bays Regional Coordinator in your area to determine space availability.

Sustainable Water Forum
21st Century Water Management: Smart, Clean and Green
Description:
Innovations in water management in the U.S. and internationally are offering the promise for more efficient and beneficial water, stormwater, and wastewater infrastructure. This informational session will look at water management in a larger context and include presentations describing the leading-edge of new practices from the perspectives of ecology, engineering, economics, and community development. The session will be relevant to municipal officials, engineers, state and local resource managers, water and wastewater commissioners, planners, DPW directors, and environmental groups. Information will be presented on:
•advancements in water-efficiency, reuse, and recovery of energy and nutrients
• the nexus of water and energy systems, and how energy use can be reduced

Modifying Tidal Inlets
Modifying Tidal Inlets to Mitigate Nitrogen Loading in Coastal Systems
Description:
As towns seek to reduce watershed nitrogen loads to coastal bays and ponds, modifying tidal inlets to improve water quality may be considered in certain scenarios as a potential management approach. Key issues to be covered include:
• technical aspects of modifying inlets and factors that control tidal flushing
• state regulations
• the viability and appropriateness of this approach for different sites
• potential environmental impacts
• advantages and disadvantages
• economic costs.

Energy Co-ops Webinar
Energy Co-ops: Structure and Benefits
(Energy in the 21st Century Webinar Series)
Description:
This webinar will explore how communities can benefit from their own energy resources by working together through energy cooperatives. Presentations will look at the Cape and Vineyard Electric Cooperative and other examples in the Northeast.
This webinar will examine energy cooperatives, how they work, and how communities and residents can use these entities to save money. Three examples of energy-cooperatives will be presented: the Cape and Vineyard Electric Cooperative, Vineyard Power which is associated with the Vineyard Energy Project, and the Fox Island Institute Wind Project in Maine. Questions such as how are energy co-ops structured and sustained, are they economically viable initiatives, and what risks if any do they pose to members will be addressed. This topic is timely as more communities and regions consider ways to tap into renewable energy resources and lower energy costs.

Ramping up Energy Efficiency Webinar
Ramping up Energy Efficiency: Moving From Talk to Action
(Energy in the 21st Century Webinar Series)
Description:
As towns seek ways to save money on energy expenditure, experts agree that the most appropriate place to start making changes is with improving energy efficiency and conservation. Yet, while this is known and accepted, towns often struggle with making meaningful progress in these areas even though the steps they need to take to realize energy savings are often within reach. This webinar will present practical steps on how to overcome some of the typical hang-ups with energy efficiency and achieve desired operational and behavior changes.

Coastal Hazards Mapping Workshop for Local Officials: Preparing for Current and Future Impacts with Available Tools
Description:
This workshop will provide an update on the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) by examining new mapping efforts and the application of delineations. Additional mapping resources such as Sea Lake and Overland Surge from Hurricane (SLOSH) Maps, Tide Gauge Records, and Inundation Visualizations will also be presented. Discussion will center on applying these tools at the local level and additional information needs. The workshop is sponsored by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management in partnership with the Waquoit Bay Reserve Coastal Training Program (CTP) and the Cape Cod Commission.

Webinar - Climate Change in Cape Cod
Description:
In this webinar, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences in the Dept. of Geosciences at Texas Tech University will present on downscaling climate change data for Cape Cod. Drawing on examples from other parts of the country where she has carried out similar projects, Dr. Hayhoe will discuss why downscaling is needed, the science behind how downscaling is accomplished, and potential ways to use downscaled climate data in decision-making and adaptation planning processes.

Putting Wind to Work in a Changing Climate
7th Annual Land-based Wind Workshop
Description:
In this period of changing economic and environmental conditions, greater attention is being placed on the role renewable energy technologies can play in tackling climate change and contributing to sustainable economic growth. Investments in wind power stand to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, dependence on fossil fuels and energy costs, as well as create more jobs in the green industry.
This workshop will deliver information on new developments at the federal, state, regional and local levels related to wind power use. High interest topics such as permitting, financing, accessing grant resources, net metering regulations, and the Green Communities Act will be addressed, among others. Case studies of successful community land-based wind projects will highlight lessons learned, financing options used, and how potential barriers were overcome. This workshop will be relevant to all communities exploring wind power.
