MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMMING

Multicultural Programming: Raising environmental awareness among immigrants
The Reserve has begun to focus attention on engaging with recent immigrants to the Cape Cod Photo of a group area. In 2008, we conducted a Cultural Needs Assessment to gain a better understanding of how to connect with this underserved audience. The Reserve has begun implementing some of the many suggestions that emerged from this process.

In 2009, funding from the Island Foundation allowed the Reserve to partner with the Cape Cod Immigrant Center and Cape Cod Community College’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program to pilot an Environmental Leadership Course for leaders from the Cape’s immigrant communities. The course, which we plan to offer annually, aims to increase environmental literacy and help raise awareness of the Reserve’s services and programs to this audience, as well as connect recent immigrants with various other environmental organizations through guest presentations. As a result of these collaborations, the Cape Cod Immigrant Center held their annual meeting here in 2009 and the Reserve has collaborated with Falmouth’s No Place for Hate committee to participate in the annual Immigration Celebration organized by the Barnstable County Human Rights Commission. The Reserve plans to continue to improve services for these communities including translating some materials for Portuguese-speaking Brazilians, which are by far the largest immigrant community on the Cape.
