Preparing for Stormy Waters

Description:

National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System Workshop: A Step-by-Step Guide for Coastal Governments

FEMA and MA DCR representatives will assist local officials and planners in understanding the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and its Community Rating System (CRS). Learn why there is growing interest in the CRS and how local communities are using the CRS to benefit their towns. Discussion will include how communities are lowering their flood insurance rates through compliance with standard floodplain management ordinances, protection of resources and facilities, planning for flood disasters, and the implementation of related tools.

Local Officials Guide To Coastal Construction

FEMA representatives will share highlights from FEMA’s Coastal Construction Manual - a guide to enhance local officials’ effectiveness in taking actions to make construction stronger and less vulnerable to coastal storms. Highlights include basic principles of planning, siting, designing, constructing, and maintaining homes in the coastal environment, which coastal officials must understand and enforce to protect communities from increasingly stormy waters.

This workshop is funded by a grant awarded to the Waquoit Bay Reserve Foundation from the FEMA 2012 Community Resilience Innovation Challenge.
