Duck Boats in the Bay- A WWII Legacy

Discover the rich history of Washburn Island and South Cape Beach that includes indigenous people, the US military, and finally the Waquoit Bay Research Reserve. As we hike along the trail to Waquoit Bay, we’ll explore changes in land use from amphibious vehicles storming the beaches, to failed development plans and eventually, a sentinel site for scientific research. Learn about the secret WWII training that became the talk of the town in 1942, and how an army convalescent camp became a favorite seaside destination for all. Heavy rain cancels. Dress for the weather and bring drinking water/sunscreen. Walk up to 1.5 miles, some in soft sand.

Meet at Bayberry lot at South Cape Beach State Park. Parking fee. $12 MA resident, $14 out of state.
