Summer Jobs - 2008

Island Manager (3)
Description: Serve as information resource for the public on a 330 acre barrier island with sandy beaches on Waquoit Bay and Vineyard Sound. Maintain small waterfront campground, trails and other assigned improvement projects. Patrol beaches to encourage compliance with rules to protect the resources including salt marsh, fragile dune systems, pine/oak woodlands and endangered species such as Piping Plovers. Develop and present interpretive programs. Island Managers camp on Washburn Island a minimum of four nights per week and spend one day working at Reserve Headquarters. Training provided.
Requirements: Applicants must be at least 20 years old with basic camping and computer skills, experience working with the public, proven interpersonal skills and knowledge of coastal ecology. Standard First Aid and CPR are required. Boating experience preferred.
Additional Info: Off-island housing, tents and minimal camping equipment provided. One starts, mid-May; 2 start in mid-June, to Labor Day.

Seasonal Park Interpreter
Description: Design, publicize and implement interpretive programs both on site and outreach. Conduct walks and special events for children and adults relating to watersheds, estuaries and climate change. Staff visitor center open house one day per week and work on various special projects related to education.
Requirements: Experience in teaching, public presentations, and interpretive walks; knowledgeable about coastal ecology. Standard First Aid and CPR required. Attendance at Training required in late June.
Salary: Starting at approx $475 per week; Work summer season.

Environmental Education Intern(s)
Description: Assist with interpretive and educational programs on–site and outreach, for adults and children relating to watersheds, estuaries and related research and work on special projects commensurate with applicant's experience. Flexible time commitments with openings available for spring, summer, or fall 2008. (Unpaid position, great experience)
Requirements: Enrollment in environmental education or related program. Applicants should be outgoing and knowledgeable about coastal environmental science.
Salary: This is an unpaid position. Free dorm housing possible for min. 20 hours of work per week. Starting and ending dates flexible including spring and fall.
