Scheduled Training

Weather and Climate
Location: Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
Target audience: Best for teachers in grades 6-9
Credit: One graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs
Meeting time: Two sessions: Saturday January 27, 8:30 - 4:30 and Sunday January 28, 12:00 - 4:00.
Course description: Weather and climate topics will connect your students with science every day! These topics, drawn from the Massachusetts frameworks, integrate math, science, and technology, and offer lots of opportunities for hands-on learning. Coastal weather is especially engaging, as land and sea exert their influences on the atmosphere. Come learn about weather forces, winter storms, summer heat waves, and how oceans and climate are connected. We’ll sort out climate fact and fiction, try out activities, observe conditions, and design investigations for students. Participants will receive lesson plans and a resource CD.
Cost: Offered free of charge at Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
Contact Pat Harcourt for more information  508-457-0495 pat.harcourt@state.ma.us

The School of Herring

Location: Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Target audience: Best for teachers in grades 5-9

Credit: One graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs

Meeting time: Two sessions: Saturday February 10, 8:30 - 4:30 and Sunday February 11, 12:00 - 4:00.

Course description: Learn the amazing story of herring, a local species of fish that swims from the ocean into fresh water during spring. Herring are a good indicator of stream health because they are sensitive to environmental changes such as increased temperature, which affects the timing of spawning. In this course, you will learn how to use simple data loggers to track water temperatures near your school. Through the generosity of the Cape Cod Foundation, we are also able to give away free data loggers to 6 participants! By studying these local fish, your students can begin to learn about the importance of clean air and water. At the same time, they will be putting science, math, and communication skills to work as they learn and tell the herring’s story. All topics will be linked to Massachusetts frameworks. Participants will receive lesson plans and a resource CD.

Cost: Offered free of charge at Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Contact Pat Harcourt for more information  508-457-0495 pat.harcourt@state.ma.us

Salt Water Studies

Location: New Bedford Whaling Museum

Target audience: Best for teachers in grades 5-8

Credit: One graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs

Meeting time: Four two-hour sessions 4:00-6:00 pm Wednesdays, March 7, 21, 28, April 4, 2007 plus field trip in April.

Course description: What do your students know about salt water?  Students are fascinated by the world of water, and we have estuaries, bays, and the ocean in our back yard!  Each of these sessions will include information, lessons, math and science activities for students, and take-home resources so you can bring salt water studies into your classroom. Participants will receive lesson plans and a resource CD.

Cost: $60.00 payable at first class to New Bedford Whaling Museum

Presented by request at your school or at the Waquoit Bay Reserve
This course is designed for teachers of grades 3-5* and will use watersheds on Cape Cod as a vehicle to cover MA Curriculum Frameworks in science, technology, history, social studies and mathematics. The course will on focus on coastal water issues on Cape Cod including watersheds, wetland habitats, groundwater, estuarine ecology and human impacts on these resources. Cranberries and trout will provide interesting stories from which to study local cultural and natural history. The course will include instruction in the use of Watersheds at Bay, a Waquoit Bay Reserve curriculum that will be presented to each participant at no cost. Each week will feature hands-on and modeling classroom activities and content and pedagogy discussions. Guest speakers will be an integral aspect of the course.

Charge Up your Curriculum with Renewable Energy
Presented by request at your school or at the Waquoit Bay Reserve
This course focuses on energy efficiency, renewable energy (photovoltaic electricity, solar thermal and wind energy) and climate change and also includes information about fossil fuels which dominate our current energy sources. Each week will feature a guest lecturer/specialist who will present content through hands-on teaching activities for their topic. Although the course is based on MA Frameworks for grades 6-10, other teachers are welcome to take the course and adapt it for their own classrooms.

Fish and Fishing by the Numbers
Presented by request at your school or at the Waquoit Bay Reserve
This two-day course introduces teachers to information and classroom activities about fish and fishing, including classification, local fish, dissection, fishing methods, and fisheries management. The course content and activities are aligned with Massachusetts state science and math frameworks. For science and math teachers in grades 6 through 10.

Oceans and Coasts in the Classroom
Presented by request at your school or at the Waquoit Bay Reserve
This course introduces oceans, coastal systems, and methods to teach marine and coastal science in the classroom. It includes topics and lesson ideas most appropriate for teachers of grades 6-10. Course material is linked to state science, math, and technology frameworks. Topics will include habitats, estuaries, currents and circulation, oceans and climate, navigation, marine life, and how technology is used to study oceans. Each class includes both math and science activities. Participants will receive materials including lesson plans, posters, and CDs, and will have opportunities to practice classroom activities.

Cape Cod’s Coastal Treasures: Making MCAS Connections

Learn how to introduce science and math concepts and skills in and out of the classroom as we study Cape Cod’s beautiful coastal ecosystems. Activities are linked to earth, physical, and life science frameworks and related to MCAS formats. Best for teachers of grades 5-9.

So You've Done a Field Trip, Now What?
Presented by request at your school or at the Waquoit Bay Reserve
Field trips are great hands-on experiences for students. There's really no substitute for getting out in the field. But do you ever feel you could do so much more with the data they collect? Get together with other classroom teachers and experienced outdoor educators and learn how to directly relate these experiences to Massachusetts Frameworks.
