WET workshop
Location:
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
Target audience: Best for teachers in grades 6-9
Meeting time: Two sessions:
Course description: Weather and climate topics will connect your students with science every day!
These topics, drawn from the Massachusetts frameworks, integrate math, science, and technology, and offer lots of opportunities for hands-on
learning. Coastal weather is especially engaging, as land and sea exert their influences on the atmosphere. Come learn about weather
forces, winter storms, summer heat waves, and how oceans and climate are connected. We’ll sort out climate fact and fiction, try out
activities, observe conditions, and design investigations for students. Participants will receive lesson plans and a resource CD.
Cost: Offered free of charge at Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Meeting time: Two sessions:
Course description: Learn the amazing story of herring, a local species of fish that swims from the ocean into fresh water during spring. Herring are a good indicator of stream health because they are sensitive to environmental changes such as increased temperature, which affects the timing of spawning. In this course, you will learn how to use simple data loggers to track water temperatures near your school. Through the generosity of the Cape Cod Foundation, we are also able to give away free data loggers to 6 participants! By studying these local fish, your students can begin to learn about the importance of clean air and water. At the same time, they will be putting science, math, and communication skills to work as they learn and tell the herring’s story. All topics will be linked to Massachusetts frameworks. Participants will receive lesson plans and a resource CD.

geologic cycles and systems. Teachers will gain knowledge and experience
through field studies, classroom activities, and web investigations.
Cranberries, Trout, Rivers, and Estuaries: Incorporating Science,
Math, Technology and Social Studies Frameworks through the Study of Cape Cod Watersheds.
Presented by request at your school or at
the Waquoit Bay Reserve

a vehicle to cover MA Curriculum Frameworks in science, technology, history,
social studies and mathematics. The course will on focus on coastal water
issues on Cape Cod including watersheds, wetland
habitats, groundwater, estuarine ecology and human impacts on these resources.
Cranberries and trout will provide interesting stories from which to study
local cultural and natural history. The course will include instruction in the use
of Watersheds at Bay, a Waquoit Bay Reserve curriculum that will be presented
to each participant at no cost. Each week will feature hands-on and modeling
classroom activities and content and pedagogy discussions. Guest speakers will

electricity, solar thermal and wind energy) and climate change and also
includes information about fossil fuels which dominate our current energy
sources. Each week will feature a guest lecturer/specialist who will present
content through hands-on teaching activities for their topic. Although the
course is based on MA Frameworks for grades 6-10, other teachers are welcome to
