The Coastal Training Program (CTP) provides science-based information, tools and
skills to regional and local decision-makers to assist them in better managing coastal
resources throughout Massachusetts. The intent of the program is to bring science
to bear on real-world coastal problems and help develop solutions. The CTP links
with and supports other core program areas within the Waquoit Bay Reserve by serving
as a conduit for research translation and a catalyst for better coastal stewardship
throughout the region.
As development pressure in the coastal zone and dependence on coastal resources
to meet population demands have increased in Massachusetts, coastal management issues
have also grown in complexity. Recognizing that professionals and volunteers working
in various capacities on coastal management issues have the ability to influence
the health and stewardship of coastal resources, the CTP endeavors to deliver timely
information to these persons to enhance their ability and confidence to make effective
and sustainable choices. The program also aims to increase understanding about human
impacts within coastal areas and facilitate networking and collaboration among people
actively working on such issues.
