species-specific=20
            trends in bivalve larval supply has the potential to greatly =
improve=20
            research and management efforts for the recruitment of =
commercially=20
            important shellfish populations to estuaries. Research on =
larval=20
            dispersal that efficiently captures the variability of =
hydrodynamics=20
            seen in coastal and estuarine systems is difficult as =
methods are=20
            limited by sampling effort or the ability to identify larvae =
to=20
            species. I hope to overcome these issues by using an =
automated,=20
            species-specific classification system to continuously =
sample=20
            hydrographic conditions and the size and taxa of bivalve =
larvae=20
            present at three sites in Waquoit Bay, MA during the =
spawning period=20
            for two years. This system can discriminate up to seven =
bivalve=20
            species common to Cape Cod, including bay species Mercenaria =

            mercenaria (quahog), Mya arenaria (soft-shelled clam), =
Crassostrea=20
            virginica (American oyster), and Argopecten irradians (bay =
scallop).=20
            The proposed study will determine the species-specific =
fluxes of=20
            pelagic bivalve larvae between Waquoit Bay and coastal =
waters as=20
            well as fluxes within a subestuary of the bay. These fluxes =
will be=20
            related to the environmental conditions and the hydrology at =
each=20
            location. The species composition of larvae will be compared =
to the=20
            settlement of commercially important shellfish species in =
the bay,=20
            M. mercenaria, A. irradians, and M. arenaria. This will =
provide=20
            information on what affects the natural abundances of =
bivalve larvae=20
            in Waquoit Bay, in terms of how local conditions can affect =
the=20
            growth and settlement of larvae and how species-specific =
fluxes can=20
            vary with location and hydrographic parameters. This data =
set will=20
            enable the comparison of spatial and temporal patterns in =
larval=20
            distributions to the recruitment of key species in the bay, =
some=20
            which have been affected by nutrient loading and eelgrass=20
            destruction. Thus, the results of this study will be an =
important=20
            resource for shellfish managers who wish to better =
understand larval=20
